A History of Purpose and Patriotism
The tradition of "Lincoln Day" dates back to the late 19th century, established to honor the legacy of Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president. In Idaho, the connection is particularly deep: it was President Lincoln who signed the act creating the Idaho Territory in 1863.
What began as a series of humble tributes has evolved into the "Lincoln Day" circuit—a cornerstone of GOP culture across the United States. These banquets serve three primary functions:
- Commemoration: Reflecting on Lincoln’s role in preserving the Union and the founding principles of the Republican Party.
- Fundraising: Providing the necessary resources for local committees to support candidates in upcoming election cycles.
- Grassroots Connection: Offering a rare venue where precinct committeemen, local farmers, business owners, and state officials sit at the same table to discuss the future of the "Gem State."
